| MEHMET OCEVIK After the Second World War, while all the master workshops were having problems and closing down one by one, a young and creative weaver, Mehmet Ocevik from Hereke started his brilliant career after his careful study of Topkapı Palace and Zareh Rugs. Because of his creativeness and excellent workmanship, he soon became a master weaver. Mehmet who was so fond of small patterns used flowers and human figures running all over the surface of the carpet instead of central medallion lay out. His great passion for the details can be seen on most of hi carpets which are filled with the flowers and buds on the red background. Animal figures he added to the scenes give great movement and life to his rugs. Mehmet mixed the silk and metal threads skillfully just creating a rainbow effect like Zareh did in earlier times. He also left 1-inch long apricot colored salvage on the both ends of the carpet. His carpets are easily recognizable because of very skillfully drawn designs, pastel, and apricot colors. Mehmet Ocevik's brilliant career ended suddenly and unexpectedly by a tragic traffic accident in 1971. This is how the last golden age of Kumkapı weaving ended. |
