HEREKE IMPERIAL
FACTORY
Hereke, located
70km in the south east of Istanbul, was the famous Imperial workshops of the
Sultans. Artistic and technical superiority of Hereke rugs and talent of
Hereke weavers put these carpets among the most distinguished and most
valuable rugs of the world. Hereke rugs are considered as the part of Ottoman
Palace group. Hereke's first silk textiles factory was established in 1843 with
the order of Sultan Abdulmecit.
In the following years, with the addition of
looms producing cotton tissues, Hereke factory was enlarged. Hereke Imperial
workshops obtained their silk directly from the city of Bursa, the first
capital of Ottoman Empire
